Ground Cherry- Aunt Molly’s
Also known as a “gooseberry” or “sea buckthorn”. Very sweet flavour with a hint of tartness.½” -¾” orange coloured fruit with a papery husk around it. High sugar content makes these great for pies and preserves. Plant resembles a small shrub with bright green toothed leaves with yellow flowers. Can grow to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Rainbow Swiss Chard
The glossy, crinkly leaves of rainbow chard will continue to grow back as individual leaves are harvested. Can be eaten fresh when leaves are still “baby”, and are a cooking green at maturity. Winter Squash- Early Butternut
This vining winter squash produces fruit that are ready to harvest when skin turns from light green to peach/beige. Gardeners like to plant butternut squash in groups of 3 in small “hills”. Full sun and regular watering. When fruit begin to grow, place wood, cardboard, straw, etc under the fruit to prevent rot that can occur with direct contact with the ground as squash become heavier with growth. Winter Squash- Delicata
Small heirloom variety of winter squash grows on a vine. Fruit is cream coloured with dark green stripes that run the length of it. Oblong in shape, the fruit grow to about 3” across and 6” long. Flesh is pale yellow and is often said to taste similar to sweet potato. Unusual for a winter squash, the outer skin of the delicata is thin and tender edible. Pepper- Shishito
Shishito peppers are very popular for grilling, broiling, roasting so that they blister and become tender. They grow well through to the very end of summer. Great for eating at any stage, but are most commonly consumed when green. As sugars develop, they turn from green to yellow to red. Approximately 1 in every 10 peppers is spicy, but less so than a jalapeno. These highly productive peppers grow well in bothe gardens and containers. Full sun with average water needs. Pepper- Jalapeno
Jalapeno peppers are a spicy variety of pepper that require full sun, temperatures between 24 and 32 degrees celsius, and have high water needs, though try not to get water on the fruit.
